Two business-class seats to the UK and Scotland.
$16,328 retail. 4.65¢ per point.

Kyle A. of Florida engaged Chartered Strategy in early June 2026 for a round-trip business-class redemption to the UK and Scotland for himself and his wife. He came in with Chase Ultimate Rewards points and a balance of 118,000 Delta SkyMiles. He had the points. He didn't have the time to figure out which transfer partner to use, which routing actually had award space, or how to avoid the UK's premium-cabin departure taxes that quietly add hundreds of dollars to the obvious bookings.

The brief

The strategy

Asymmetric routing with two different transfer partners. The Chase Ultimate Rewards balance was the lever, transferred to a different airline partner on each side of the Atlantic. The 118,000 Delta SkyMiles balance was deliberately preserved for a future redemption where Delta is a better fit. Forcing Delta into this trip would have either burned more value than it was worth or boxed the routing into the UK-departure fuel surcharges we needed to avoid.

Outbound: Chase Ultimate Rewards transferred to Flying Blue, then booked into Virgin Atlantic Upper Class direct to London Heathrow.

Return: Chase Ultimate Rewards transferred to Aeroplan, then booked as a multi-city itinerary departing Edinburgh with a one-night stopover in Warsaw before the long-haul to New York. Adding the Edinburgh-to-Warsaw business-class leg cost an extra 5,000 Aeroplan miles per passenger under the Aeroplan stopover rule. That single move did two things at once. It shifted the long-haul Atlantic departure point from the UK to Poland, which mostly avoided the UK's premium-cabin departure tax that would have added roughly $150 per passenger in fuel surcharges. And it built a free full day in Warsaw into the existing award.

The execution

Leg Route & Carrier Cabin Cash retail Points used Taxes / fees Net value CPP
Outbound Direct to London Heathrow on Virgin Atlantic Upper Class $7,533 171,000 Flying Blue
(Chase UR transfer)
$485.20 $7,047.80 4.12¢
Return EDI → FRA → WAW → JFK on Lufthansa + LOT, overnight in Warsaw Business $8,795 160,000 Aeroplan
(Chase UR transfer)
$435.80 $8,359.20 5.22¢
Combined Open-jaw, two passengers, multi-currency Business / Upper Class $16,328 331,000 Chase UR $921.00 $15,407.00 4.65¢

The outcome

$15,407 in retail value captured for $921 out-of-pocket and 331,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points the client already held. The Warsaw stopover added 10,000 total miles across both passengers to the Aeroplan side and saved roughly $300 in UK departure taxes for the pair. The 118,000 Delta SkyMiles balance was untouched and remains available for the next redemption.

The blended cost-per-point of 4.65¢ sits well above the 2¢ floor that defines a fair premium-cabin redemption and inside the range our yield methodology targets for client work.

Chris built the entire UK and Scotland trip in business class for my wife and me. He routed us through a stopover in Warsaw that mostly killed the UK departure tax and gave us a day in Poland on our way home. We would have spent about $16k in cash. With his help, we spent $921 and points that I already had. I would recommend him to anyone with the spend to use him!

Why this booking worked

Important caveats

Award availability, transfer bonuses, fuel surcharges, and program rules change continuously and are outside our control. The redemption above was real and verified. It is illustrative of the kind of outcome a Strategy Charter engagement is designed to produce, not a guarantee of any specific cash equivalent for a future client booking. Individual results vary based on currencies available, target dates, target cabins, and route flexibility. See our yield methodology for the full math behind the $50,000+ annual yield figure.
